Can you identify the subject (S), verb (V), direct object (DO) in the following sentences?
1. Mr. Thy is going to design the new bridge.
2. Janet practices the piano every day.
3. Ernesto took many pictures in Florida.
4. Nataliya has finished the homework.
5. Paul is going to return the toaster to the department store.
Notice that in sentences 3 and 5, we have other nouns, "Florida" and "the department store." These are not direct objects. Verbs act directly on direct objects. The subject does something to the object. Notice that "Florida" and "the department store" also have prepositions before them: "in Florida" and "to the department store." Direct objects do not follow prepositions.
