When to use the Passive Voice

Here are some examples of active sentences that have an unknown or general subject.

1. Someone built that house in 1908.
2. People speak English in many countries of the world.
3. An unknown assailant attacked the man on Market Street.
4. Someone planted this oak tree fifty years ago.
5. People made those computers in Japan.

The passive voice is well-used here to eliminate the unknown or general subject.

Green ? 1 1. That house was built in 1908.
Green ? 2 2. English is spoken in many countries of the world.
Green ? 3 3. The man was attacked on Market Street.
Green ? 4 4. This oak tree was planted fifty years ago.
Green ? 5 5. Those computers were made in Japan.
