Read the following paragraph. All of the sentences are in active voice. SIX of the sentences would be better in passive voice. Choose the six sentences and rewrite them in the passive voice on your paper. Think about focus and the importance of the subjects when making your choice.
BART: Bay Area Rapid Transit1. BART seems like it has always been a part of the Bay Area.
2. However, the history of BART has been long and expensive.
3. People first discussed the idea for BART in 1951.
4. Eleven years later, the voters approved the money for BART, and construction began in 1964.
5. Construction workers completed BART in late 1972.
6. The construction was slow for many reasons, including bad weather and animals.
7. There was a bad storm which sunk one piece of the trans-bay tube.
8. Gophers chewed apart some of the control cables.
9. When BART opened, it was the most advanced and luxurious train system of its kind.
10. Computers controlled the entire BART system.
11. BART workers could adjust the special BART rails to ensure a smooth ride.
12. The cars had carpets, soft seats, air conditioning, and even large picture windows.
13. Today, BART is an important and reliable part of the Bay Area transportation network.
14. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake only slightly damaged BART.
15. Because BART kept on running, people were still able to commute from Contra Costa and Alameda counties to San Francisco.
16. BART continues to open new stations and improve service today.
