Computer Forensics And Investigations

Do you have basic computer skills? Do you like puzzles? Can you learn detective skills? Are you interested in working for Law Enforcement, the U.S. Military, Government Agencies or Consulting? If so, you should consider becoming a Computer Forensics Specialist.

Computer Forensics is a growing field with excellent salaries and lots of employment opportunities. Growth in this field has boomed after recent terrorist attacks and the growth of white-collar crime. Computer Forensics Specialists combine computer expertise with investigative skills and knowledge of the legal system. As a Forensic Scientist, you would be responsible for the collection of evidence on computers, writing reports, and presenting this information in court.

This course maps to the International Association of Computer Investigation Specialists (IACIS) certification exam preferred by Federal, State, Local and International Law Enforcement agencies. For more information on careers in computer forensics, please see the below links:

Objectives:

During this class, the student will learn:

  1. The seizure or acquisition of magnetic media
  2. Acquisition, marking, handing and storage of evidence
  3. Preserving the chain of custody
  4. The right to privacy
  5. The rules of evidence as they relate to computer examinations
  6. How to wipe, verify and validate media
  7. How to protect the original media for accidental writes
  8. How to make and verify exact copies of media
  9. Basic PC hardware construction and theory
  10. Authenticating MS Office documents and accessing and interpreting metadata
  11. Basic data recovery techniques
  12. Basic password recovery techniques
  13. Basic CDR recording processes and accessing data on CDR media
  14. The ability to write clear, understandable reports

Prerequisites:

There are no mandatory prerequisites for this course, but students should be comfortable using the Windows operating system and have a basic understanding of computer security. CompTIA A+ certification (or equivalent) will be especially useful. If you're unfamiliar with basic computer security, or could use a refresher course, consider taking Fundamentals of Network Security first.

Career Opportunities:

Computer Forensic Specialists are employed by state, county, and local law enforcement agencies, the FBI, Secret Service, US Customs, IRS, the US Military and military contractors, software companies, Internet Service Providers, and Fortune 500 companies.
