CLASS INFORMATION:
Math 151-01 (038275)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course includes the study of operations on algebraic expressions,
linear equations and inequalities, graphs of linear equations,
systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, factoring, and rational
expressions. This is the first course in algebra. It is intended for
the student who has taken a year or more of high school algebra or
who has a mastery of basic math skills and knowledge of fundamental
operations with signed numbers.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course, with appropriate study, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate basic skills in algebra up through quadratic equations
through tests and problem solving
- Set up stated problems algebraically and solve the resulting equations
- Solve problems presented via formulas or procedures
- Graph linear equations
- Solve systems of linear equations using graphing,
substitution, and elimination methods
- Simplify exponential expressions with integer exponents
- Identify polynomials and perform operations with polynomials
- Factor polynomials using grouping, FOIL, special products formulas,
and trial and error methods
- Solve quadratic equations using factoring and their applications
- Simplify rational expressions and complex fractions and
solve applications of rational equations
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of MATH 190 (Basic Mathematics)
or placement evaluation

HOMEWORK:
Homework is to be done (neatly) as we go through each chapter,
then turned in on the day of the test on that material, before
you start the test. All the pages should be stapled together
in order and your name should be on the front.
"Neatly" means that you write each problem, do the work,
and then write your answer. Answers without supporting
work are not considered acceptable.
Your grade on each set of homework will depend on completeness,
and will be counted as a quiz, worth 10 points.
Click here to see the problems that will
be assigned.
QUIZZES and TESTS:
A 10-point quiz will be given at the beginning of almost every class
meeting, and will consist of problems from any previous homework,
or problems very similar to those.
There will be no possibility of making up any missed quiz for any reason.
There will be a test for each chapter. Make-ups on tests are possible,
but highly discouraged. They must be pre-arranged with me before
the scheduled test.
The Final will be comprehensive. If you have taken all of the chapter tests,
I will calculate your quiz/test/final average and compare it to your score
on the final, then use the better of the two to determine your grade. If you
have not taken all of the chapter tests, your grade will be determined by
your quiz/test/final average.
Here are the anticipated dates for tests:
Chapter 1 Test: September 17
Chapter 2 Test: October 1
Chapter 3 Test: October 15
Chapter 8 Test: October 22
Chapter 4 Test: November 10
Chapter 5 Test: November 26
Chapter 6 Test: December 10
Final (Comprehensive): December 15, 9:30 - 11:30am
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
As a student at Ohlone College, you are expected to pursue your
course work with honesty and integrity. If you do not, I will
abide by Ohlone board policy, which you are expected to know.
You can read it
here. For this particular class, work that appears
to have been copied will receive a score of zero.
