Directions: You ask someone for the following information. Begin your sentences with, "Could you tell me..."
A. You are visiting a city, and you want to buy some stamps to mail some postcards. Find out the location of the nearest post office.
B. You are in the supermarket, and you are thinking about buying some frozen dinners because you think they are on sale. Ask a clerk to make sure.
C. You want to attend a concert tomorrow night, but there may be no more tickets available. You call the box office to try and buy a ticket.
Directions: Change these sentences of direct speech into reported speech using noun clauses. Pay attention to punctuation, pronouns, and verb tenses.
Situation: Carol and Robert are in a shopping mall.
Example: Carol said to Robert, "I need to buy a birthday present for my thirteen-year-old niece."
Carol told Robert that she needed to buy a birthday present for her thirteen-year-old niece.
1. Carol asked Robert, "What do you think I should get her?"
2. Robert said to Carol, "I'm not sure."
3. Robert asked Carol, "What kinds of things does your niece like?"
4. Carol answered, "She likes to play volleyball and swimming."
5. Carol added, "We went hiking in Yosemite last summer, and we had a great time."
6. Robert said, "I think an outdoor or athletic gift would be good."
7. Carol said, "She is also starting to get interested in boys and make-up."
8. Robert suggested, "Since she has so many interests, you should get a gift certificate."
9. Carol said, "That's a great idea."
10. Carol added, "Which store should we get a gift certificate for?"
