A resumé is a brief summary of your abilities, education, experience and skills. Its main task is to convince prospective employers to contact you. A resumé has one purpose: to get your foot in the door.

Resumés must do their work quickly. Employers or personnel officers may look through hundreds of applications and may spend only a few seconds reviewing your resumé. To get someone to look at it longer, your resumé must quickly convey that you are capable and competent enough to be worth interviewing. The more thoroughly you prepare your resumé now, the more likely it will be that someone will read it later.

Your resumé should:

  • highlight education (e.g., major, minor, relevant course work, work experience, honors)
  • summarize experience (e.g., paid, volunteer, internships)
  • emphasize skills and abilities
  • convince potential employers that you have the qualifications to do the job
  • be typed/printed and error free
  • be short and concise (preferably one page).

For more information on resumé writing, including a resumé writing guide, please go to Counseling Services, located on the third floor of Building Seven, Fremont campus.

Earn extra credit by attending a Tri-Cities Resume Workshop on the Newark Campus. Call the Tri-Cities One Stop Career Center, explain that you are an Ohlone WEX student, and then sign up for a resume-writing workshop. Write your instructor for a form that you will have signed by the resume workshop leader that will show proof of attendance.

Your resumé, including your work experience for this semester, is due to your instructor the on or before the last day of instruction for the semester.
