This is a Library "Pathfinder" designed to assist Forensics students in locating useful resources for speech and debate events. Since finding "hot topics" is a high priority for the forensics class, this guide consists mainly of resources for locating the latest topics in a variety of areas. In addition to the "hot topics" links, this guide also contains links to sites on developing speeches, forensics organizations, forensics programs at other schools, and other sites that are related to the art of forensics. Finally, this guide contains a small section on locating material that can be used for Oral interpretation events.

From the University of Kansas, the Virtual Presentation Assistant is step by step guidance through the process of planning, researching and delivering a speech. This site is designed to help you target your specific needs as a speaker by allowing you to access any or all of the contents such as: Determining your purpose, selecting your topic, researching your topic, analyzing your audience, supporting your points, outlining your points, and presenting your speech.
From the homepage of an avid speech and debate participant, Extempland offers extensive information and ideas for extemporaneous speaking. Included among the links are tips on speech structure and delivery, and resources and links for gathering information for speeches,
A good resource for information about speech and debate as well as a good section for finding the lateset hot topics. The general debate information contains information such as extemp speech, leagues and organizations, media and journals. The news section pulls the latest news on current debate topics from a wide variety of sources. There is also a useful section on "required reading" to further increase your knowledge of popular debate topics.
The Debatabase is a searchable reference utility for student debaters in any country. Enter keywords in the box below the menu to search our directory of topics, each with arguments for and against, background information, visitor opinions and tips for further research.
Sponsored by IDEA, the International Debate Education Association, Debatabase is managed by Noel Selegzi, the executive director of IDEA and is updated frequently.
Sponsored by the Microsoft Network, MSNBC this site contains the latest up-to-date information in all areas: Business, Health, Technology, Entertainment, and Sports. The index section of the site is useful for finding "hot topics" because it contains links to all of the latest news stories, arranged by topics. The site is updated frequently throughout the day.
TIME.com is the daily online component of TIME magazine. TIME.com is updated several times a day with analysis of the day's news. The STUDENT CENTER makes researching a topic quicker and easier by offering pre-packaged collections of the best TIME articles on a specific topic, theme or event. It contains packages of articles on topics ranging from school violence to global warming.
While this site does not contain the full-text of all news stories, it is a good starting point for gathering the latest news topics. The Learning Resource Center subscribes to the print version of TIME magazine, which is located in the Periodical section.
The online version of the weekly magazine U.S. News & World Report, this site contains all of the latest headlines as well as the full-text of some of the articles. It is a good source for finding out the latest news topics in a wide variety of areas: Education, Health, Opinion, Personal Technology, Politics, Travel, Vital Statistics, and Work. Updated several times during the day, this is a good place to find the latest world and national information. The Ohlone College Library also subscribes to this magazine which can be found in the Periodical section.
PBS, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is a private, non-profit media enterprise owned and operated by the nation's 349 public television stations. A trusted community resource, PBS uses the power of noncommercial television, the Internet and other media to enrich the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education services that inform, inspire and delight. The PBS website supplements the television programming by providing interactive coverage of human interest topics in areas such as history, science, arts, and culture.
A good source for finding all online newspapers from around the world, which can expand the opportunities for locating interesting topics. Yahoo's newspaper directory is organized by category to facilitate use. Categories include: news and media, college/university newspapers, business newspapers, street newspapers, educational newsapers, and newspapers by geographic location.
A good source for locating topics relating the news and issues in higher edcuation. The full text of the articles may only be accesed by those who subscribe. However, this site does contain many useful features for everyone. Articles on distance education and information technology are free to all. Also, the site contains the headlines of the latest edition of the Chronicle, which can be useful in finding topics. Also, the Ohlone College Library subscribes to the print version of this magazine, which can be found in the Periodicals section.

The purpose of this organization is "to promote the inter- ests of interscholastic debate,oratory,and public speaking by en- couraging a spirit of fellowship and by conrring upon deserving candidates a worthy badge of distinction." The NFL site is sponsored by the University of Vermont. It has many useful features for the forensic student, including Rostrum , a speech magazine published 10 times yearly (monthly September - June) by the NFL. It boasts a variety of articles on all aspects of speech and debate, as well as columns by Bill Davis and other prominent teachers. Features also includeminutes from NFL Executive council meetings, rules changes, tournament results for district and national tournaments, special awards, notes which pertain to coaches and students, tournament information for the National Tournament, monthly reports on district standings, book reviews; advertisements for handbooks, speech and debate camps, and teaching/coaching opportunities.

Published monthly, this journal focuses on literature, politics, science, and the arts. According the mission statement of the magazine, the goal of that Atlantic Monthly is to "provide a considered look at all aspects of our national life; to write, as well, about matters that are not strictly American; to emphasize the big story that lurks, untold, behind the smaller ones that do get told; to write with intelligence and perspective about matters such as marriage, morals, and the mind that are important but aren't necessarily "news"; to shun the bandwagon; and to spread the conclusions of our authors to people who need to know." This journal is a good source of information for special interest stories. It can be found in the periodicals section.
